All Steam is doing is requiring disclosure of AI usage. Keep in mind that the average consumer likely doesn’t care enough to abhor AI for ethical reasons. Basically, AI had no visible positive impact on gaming so far. Otherwise, disclosing AI use would not harm your ability to sell your game. Fact is, there’s no killer app pro AI people can point to.

“This week, Tim Sweeney pulls more shit out of his ass because he still isn’t capable of running a company good enough to have an accidental monopoly.”

If he keeps going like this, Steam will be getting a Christmas bonus out of a slander case.

I’ve gotten a refund on one game so far that got outed for using AI. Even with that, it’s really easy for a dev to sweep away all AI discussion on their community forum.

Steam is doing the bare minimum in terms of AI disclosure. I guess even that is enough to make Sweeney seethe.

This is giving me some thoughts so I m writing them out here.

On the one hand, i can see where ai can be used as a tool in the production of games and art and writing. Especially early on in the ideation, development stage.

On the other hand, experts in those parts of production, the designers, storyboarders, writers etc. all seem to think that humans do those jobs much better than ai.

As a consumer of goods and services if i see ai in the end product i will think it’s cheap. Which for some things that makes sense. An independent writer publishing their first book with their own money might not have the funds to spare for a human to make their cover. So they use ai. An indie game designer might have a great idea, but cant write or shit, or do character designs. In that space it makes sense.

However ai taints every aspect of the project. If i3 see an ai image on a book cover, im going to assume that ai was used in the writing. If sqeenix is going to use ai on a kingdom hearts promotional image im going to assume they’re using it everywhere else in their production. if i buy their product at all im going to be looking at every inch of it to see where the human hands stopped. But I’m not going to pay premium prices for cheap ai slop.

It’s like seeing high fructose corn syrup on the label. I’d rather just buy real maple syrup.

This is a very good analogy. Ai is the dollar store discount brand. Like im expecting it to be made with “chocolate flavor” and it sure as hell has some toxic chemicals and a few heavy metals.

Let’s call Tim Sweeney as “Tim Swiney”. Someone with real Photoshop skills should give him a pig nose and ears.

Tim should just start his own store where he can set the rules and let the market decide whether or not they like the disclosures.

If he’s right, his store would be a dominant force, and … what’s that? He’s been trying that for the better part of a decade and nobody buys anything there?

Maybe if he starts using slimy business tactics like store exclusivity on a normally open platfo- hold on, I’ve just been given a note… ok, wow.

Next I’ll find out he’s been giving games away and still can’t- oh, another note… interesting…

But at least he has a bunch of fantastic programmers making the store the best it can- ok, this note just says “AI”.

It’s too bad, I really like his early work. Jill of the Jungle, Epic Pinball, Jazz the Jackrabbit, Tyrian, all the Unreal Tournament games, Unreal Engine 1/2/3

Epic Pinball was made by the founder of Digital Extremes. He and the team he built there did a ton of Unreal through UT2003. UT2004 was the end of the partnership, with Epic handling the new design work and Digital Extremes being relegated to art, UI, and a few maps.

I hate most things people would call ‘AI’ for a variety of reasons. Hiding its usage in something just means I’m not going to trust your platform at all, not suddenly stop caring about the issue. It’s a problem steam has as well with not properly enforcing meaningful disclosure or a vetting process. Hell, the recent event didn’t even have a filter for AI so I spent no money on steam, either.
