The next hardware manufacturer saying “Actually, we do GPUs for gaming” will be King/Queen of the world.

Also “Luigi, we need you so bad.”

that manufacturer would have a fraction of the sales. They’re all doing this because data centers buy way contracts are simply more lucrative; the planned rollout of data centers means they’ll sell so much more that they simply can’t accommodate enthusiasts and home builds

This is of course the goal of people like Altman and bezos, they want to hoard compute after hoarding 99+% of all the wealth amongst like 50 people. This is why resistance to data center rollouts is so important and to a further step fair distribution of resources as a political platform. This mess wouldn’t exist if oligarchs were reigned in

Not gonna happen any time soon. The barrier of entry is massive.

Making decent drivers alone is a humongous undertaking: You have to catch up to the work of several decades - and it’s a moving target. That’s on top of just how difficult it is to design good silicon. Just look at how Chinese GPU manufacturers are struggling to match low-end cards from 10 years ago (even though they are lying and claiming they are matching high-end cards from one generation ago) with cards that have many times the power draw and cost - and all of that with far worse games compatibility.

Hell, even the giant that is (soon to be probably: was) Intel failed to leave a mark in the dedicated GPU business and they actually have decades of experience making (pretty shitty) integrated GPUs and (even shittier) drivers for them.

She’s right though. Look at their revenue. Data centers are 10x their gaming division.

Gaming pulls in less than 1B profit a year. An absolute drip compared to their Datacenter business.

I’m surprised they bother with gaming at all once you realize what a side project it basically is for them in terms of revenue.

Wut? Wait. The AMD CEO is the cousin of the nvidia CEO? Like, the CEO of the number two GPU chip company is cousin of the number one company y, and effectively there isn’t really a number three so this GPU market really is really a family monopoly?

It’s pretty f. weird that Lisa Su is the CEO despite being so closely related to Jensen, I would dislike this if I were an AMD investor. However this is not a family monopoly, since neither Su or Jensen own these companies, not substantially anyway. (well below 1% & 3 something % owned respectively) Meaning of shareholders at large disliked Lisa Su’s way of doing things, she would be booted without too many hurdles I would think & the same is true for Jensen.

Welcome to late stage capitalism! Market fundamentalism was always a lie, the american dream has been dead for over a century.

At this point, we’re gonna need Valve to get into the GPU business or else PC gaming is going to collapse

Once I tried to design my own open-source GPU architecture.

BTW if anyone wants to reuse the name “VideoDSP” for the shader cores, then feel free to do it.

Not really. With AAA maybe, but there are millions of great games out there that run on basically phone hardware. And with valve creating a translation layer for x86 to arm, all of them are basically in reach.

I don’t suppose there’s a way for someone to get inside AMD and irritate its innards in a way that will maake it hork ATI back up, is there?

Statements like this are good for the stock price & have little impact on how the company is actually operating. (not claiming AMD is doing so great serving its consumer user base though)

They win no matter how this AI thing pans out. Probably the company that is the safest from an AI bubble bursting (although not the safest in general due to their geographical location).
