What strikes me the most is how its a multibillion dollar company but a large part of the work was seemingly done by staff in their free time and by modders. Its seems like EA itself did the bare minimum.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they were told “you can do this but it can’t cost us anything and its in your own time”.

More likely, it’s in their contracts that anything they come up with belongs to the company, even if they did it at home, on their own time.
