This is kind of interesting: With BioWare being a Canadian company, the leader of the federal NDP, Avi Lewis, tooted his view on the shut down. Mostly to say private equity sucks, but also:

The developers at BioWare know how to run the studio. They know how to make the games we all love. They should be given the first opportunity - and the federal support - to buy it and run it themselves.

I don’t know what was involved when Microsoft let Double Fine go independent instead of closing it, but it would be nice if BioWare got the same option from EA (even if EA probably wouldn’t let them have Mass Effect and Dragon Age).

I’m not sure they do. EA bought Bioware in 2007… The first Mass Effect released in 2007.

The original Bioware founders left in 2012, and other than Dragon Age: Inquisition in 2014, all of their releases have had major issues since.

Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2017, Anthem in 2019, Mass Effect Legendary Edition in 2021 (not bad, but it’s a compilation/update of stuff made prior to their departure), and Dragon Age: The Veilguard in 2024.

Where is the evidence that the current Bioware team knows how to make “games we all love”? It seems to me that left alongside the founders in 2012.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Bioware going independent would be a much better option than closing entirely, but trying to blame all the issues on EA and assuming an independent Bioware would be great… just means people aren’t paying attention.

It doesn’t matter what EA does because no one should buy EA games anyways.

They were already a shitty company before the Saudis bought them, if anyone is still dumb enough to buy their games, they deserve the slop they get.

      Nope, no one indeed.

However, I can’t even be disappointed that the studio has closed. To me the studio has been dead for a long while now since EA’s acquisition and the co-founders leaving.

To me the studio has been dead for a long while now since EA’s acquisition and the co-founders leaving.

I’ve seen people mention this a lot today… But those two events are really quite far apart, even if it was only 5 years. The founders leaving definitely seems to have been the turning point, but honestly EA purchasing Bioware didn’t seem to make a difference.

EA acquired Bioware in 2007. Meaning the entirety of Mass Effect and Dragon Age were created under EA. I think it’s a pretty hard thing to try and claim that EA was the issue when both of those series were handled under their ownership.

Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk left Bioware in Sep/Oct 2012, after Mass Effect 3. And both of them left the industry entirely, not just the company, going into completely unrelated things. But even after their departure Bioware released Dragon Age: Inquisition in 2014 which was still good. One could argue I suppose that it was still initially developed under their management, and just finished after they left.

It wasn’t until 2017 with Mass Effect: Andromeda that we really started to see a shift from Bioware. Anthem was 2019, and Dragon Age: Veilguard was 2024.

So it clearly was the departure of the founders that resulted the downfall of Bioware from glory, EA doesn’t seem to have been a primary cause.
