I wrote a blog post on the current trend of game decompilations using AI and where we’re going with this. It’s all very promising but oh boy are the implications scary.

Newer AI models and workflows are now able to decompile games in a matter of days, or maybe less. The code isn’t nearly as clean as doing it by hand, but it works. Some ports are a mess made by people who have no idea what they’re doing, but most ports are undeniably impressive and stable.

    Where Popcar’s started to lie.

There are hundreds of these projects now, with more coming every day.

You can absolutely have your opinions regarding AI, but you have to admit this is cool.

    Thesis.

Anybody can decompile other software and use it any way they’d like, and nobody can stop them.

Last time I checked, only millionaires & mortgagors can afford hardware to run these markov machines.

it’s still causing a lot of issues in the world, and it’s still accelerating us to a future that is too uncertain. But this is one of the positives of having such a technology, and I hope instead of random internet users attacking those using AI for decompilation and blindly hating these projects, we can just accept the win and play that old game you like at 4K 240FPS.

Porcar is ok with genocide & gentrification so long as e can play modified games. That’s the certainty of being a rich privileged brat.

Decompiling is not new. Modding games that weren’t made to be moddable is not new. Heck, Pokemon DS games have been decompiled, hacked, modded, and what have you to hell and back for decades.

I’m still very cautiously optimistic about even this use of AI. For me it’s about the loss of understanding the techniques and underlying process of this type of work and any work honestly. These types of advancements affect so much more than just games and it’s like you said, both interesting and impossibly scary at the same time.

The Daily podcast just the other day had a very good interview interview with a mathematician about AI and the recent advancements of it potentially solved one of the Millennium Prize Problems that echoes your sentiments in their field.
