I would probably prefer an Aperture Science movie to a Portal movie. The backstory and supporting characters are more interesting than a real life version of the game play. Chel just isn’t that interesting and neither are the puzzles if you aren’t solving them.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
Everyone keep in mind that this isn’t some Microslop project. This is a very artistic person (Kane Parsons) and a very un-corporate-like IP owner (Valve). It could go wrong, but I certainly don’t expect it to be bland.
Portal is a game, it’s only fun because YOU are playing it. Unless this strays massively from the source material I don’t see how this could be more than ‘ok’.
I would expect a show about portal to focus on Aperture Science as a company, not the gameplay of the Portal games. That wouldn’t translate well at all.
And yet, we got 2 mario movies and a minecraft movie in the past 5 years.
Yeah, none of which have followed the gameplay or plot of the games exclusively.
Big “speculation” going on here
My reply to you wasn’t intended to be malicious, lighten up
We’re all just pointing out speculation, wasn’t intended to be malicious.
Calm down
I’m conflicted. It has the potential for some of the best visuals and comedy to ever come out of a video game movie, but part of me also struggles with how they’re going to not make the portals feel like too much of the focus.
Chell and Glados both find the portals relatively unremarkable in context, but if in the movie the whole time they’re like “😱PORTALS?! Look how cool they are!!!” I think it will ruin the vibe.
It has to acknowledge the portals and then immediately move past them to focus on the story. Otherwise it’s just going to be a bad visual treat with no substance.
I don’t really see how this game is a good premise for a movie. Portal is very funny and entertaining, but there’s plenty of funny and entertaining content out there. And the story isn’t special enough that losing the interactivity and the fun puzzle solving of the video game would make seeing a live-action Chell worth it. I’d much rather play Portal 3
Agreed. A funny and entertaining story in one medium does not necessarily translate 1:1 to a different medium. However, there are things that cinematic storytelling does differently (arguably better, though that’s a personal preference) than experiential storytelling. One area that an adaptation of Portal could focus on which was (intentionally) de-emphasized by Valve is the potential for mind-bending visual trickery and bonkers shot compositions. Not that these things were totally absent from the game, but Valve’s longstanding refusal to move away from a limited first person perspective put a hard ceiling on what they could accomplish visually. A filmmaker who doesn’t have that same bugaboo could probably do some pretty cool stuff with the concept.
Of course, interesting visuals don’t mean the adaptation will be good, but at least there’s an avenue for doing something with the property that the games did not explore.
I feel like you could make a decent to good mini/series about Portal. There’s plenty of lore, and if whoever made it tied into Half-Life somehow, that would be even cooler (it could probably literally just be a quick mention of Black Mesa or something on a whiteboard somewhere).
Each episode could be a “test chamber” or two, and each episode ramps up the action, stakes, and questions.
Tease Ratman; maybe the Cake; make the turrets extra little characters (kinda like the Battle Droids in TCW); maybe even have some Personality Cores to provide some extra opinions/dialog about what’s going on, like Wheatley, but more than just him.
Edit: I bet J.K. Simmons would be up for coming back for more Cave Johnson shenanigans. Idk about live action, but some more recordings would be fun.
“Speedy thing go in, speedy thing come out.”
You’re conflicted over zero substantive details? How?
This is known as “speculation”
Is Stephen Merchant on board?
While you wait
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie with a silent protagonist turn out good.
presumably it’s set before events of the game.
Chell wouldn’t necessarily be the protagonist. It could be Rattmann or other unexplored Aperture employees/robots
I liked Sisu.
But that’s all that comes to mind.
Batman.
…this is gonna turn into another Halo TV show, isn’t it?
I cant wait to see Wheatley’s bare ass.
Ok, now pass me the hopium. 💉
I’m NGL, if it doesn’t have a queer woman director, I don’t know if they’ll get why it works.
Edit: lol, seriously didn’t expect that to piss you guys off, but then again, a reminder of the demos on Lemmy, whether they say it or not.
Can you elaborate on this? It’s been several years since I’ve played the games, but I thought Chell being gay was a just a fan theory?
It was a (half) joke about GLaDOS being attractive to lesbians for specific reasons, and cishet men not really getting it. But also, I don’t care if it’s a “fan theory?” The character is like, a complete blank canvas, so I think it’s kind of silly to say she isn’t queer because it isn’t like, “part of the lore.”
GLaDOS also has pretty specific character traits that are easy to fuck up if you don’t understand why they’re endearing, which is more of the point.
Apologies, wasn’t trying to imply that the fan theory was wrong. I think it’s fun that people flesh out the universe. I just didn’t understand the joke. But now I am curious what it is about GLaDOS that’s so attractive to lesbians lol.
Definitely agree that GLaDOS is a nuanced character that the showrunners need to understand before they hamfist them as a villain.
Even in the before times I thought she was attractive. I thought it was so cool when I was able to get a screenshot of her face in both games.
