Slop Linux got money to spend and the reactionary ----- is the first one to get it.
David Heinemeier Hansson, aka DHH, has put a number on how serious he is about desktop Linux. That number is eight million dollars, and it’s going into a brand new nonprofit called the Omacom Foundation.
DHH is incorporating the foundation now, set to cover the Omarchy trademark, its infrastructure and hosting, promotion for the project, and funding for the open source developers whose work it depends on.
He calls it a “moral obligation,” not just to get Omarchy into more people’s hands but to change how they use a computer in the first place.
The above is so Google-in-early-days-vibes coded that one has to think they should know by now that nobody is buying it. Except that the gen alpha has the attention span of a flea and doesn’t really read anything nor it’s interested in History. So those techy bozos will always find new prey.
Michael Dell of Dell Technologies, Patrick Collison of Stripe, Tobi Lütke of Shopify, Jack Dorsey of Block, Matthew Prince of Cloudflare, Jason Fried of 37signals, Brendan Iribe of Sesame, and DHH himself each put in a million dollars to make it happen.
People already like using Omarchy, DHH says, and he wants this money to last as long as possible instead of getting spent all at once while also making the most out of it.
There are two major updates to this. Omacom funding has hit $10 million, and it has become a premier sponsor for Quickshell.
Hyprland first to gain
Hyprland is the first project outside Omarchy to see any of this money. Omacom is extending an exclusive sponsorship to support Vaxry, the developer behind the Wayland compositor Omarchy runs on.
Under this, he is locked into an agreement for three years, with the possibility of extending for two more years.
This way Vaxry gets to work on Hyprland full time without needing to think about the money. As part of this arrangement, the €5/month Hyprperks subscription service will be discontinued, and everything offered under it will be provided for free.
DHH also joked about finding Vaxry a pookie, noting that:
Many thanks to 37signals (hello self! 😂), Butterfly, and Framework for helping Hyprland get to this point. Thrilled that the Omacom Foundation can take over from October 10, and give one of the best developers in this new Linux moment the chance to go all-in.
(* This deal does not include any direct assistance in getting Vaxry a girlfriend, but I’ll personally be available as a reference for any inquiries on the matter.*)
I’ll feel bad for any girl taking her chances.
Do you remember this?
This isn’t the first time we are talking about money and Hyprland. Back in 2025, Framework became a Gold tier sponsor of the project. But that didn’t sit too well with many people, as soon after, a thread titled “Framework supporting far-right racists?” came up on the official forum.
The original poster called out Vaxry’s old freedesktop.org ban and pushed Framework to explain why it was funding the project. Framework’s own account made things worse that same day. It posted a tweet comparing Omarchy to the old Windows XP product key meme, and people read that as an endorsement of DHH.
While Framework did send hardware to people at Omarchy, the project itself never got any direct funding. Later, Framework had to start publishing a running list of its sponsorships after people kept asking exactly who the company was funding and why.
Where Omarchy’s headed
Quattro, Omarchy’s newest release, shipped recently, building AI agents into the desktop by default instead of treating them as an extra. While none of the eight patrons have said publicly that Omarchy’s AI bet factored into their decision to back the foundation.
My read is that it’s hard to ignore, especially with Michael Dell’s company betting heavily on AI infrastructure elsewhere. A distro built around AI agents is exactly the kind of bet a company selling AI hardware would want to back.
And it all ties into what DHH said about truly democratizing Linux.
Whether that $8 million and a nonprofit structure are what bring about the “year of the Linux desktop” is a question for another time.

“Do you know how little it narrows this down”-meme here
I’m just going to assume they are referring to earth at this stage
They’re referring to the Rails guy.
the fat controller from thomas the tank engine?

and it’s losing its purity or something.
He straight up never said “purity” or any synonym. Are you projecting?

too many brown immigrants in london
Not really what he said, but close though:
https://world.hey.com/dhh/as-i-remember-london-e7d38e64
Chiefly because [London is] no longer full of native Brits.
A factual statement. If a linear forecast continues, “White” Britons will be 0% in ~2090, and “Native” Britons will hit 0% in ~2050. Of course that’s a big IF, if it will really hit 0%, but these numbers show there’s a clear demographic replacement going on (intentional or not).
Stats taken from Wikipedia:
Year % of “White” 1961 97.7% 1971 92.6% 1981 86.6% 1991 79.80% 2001 71.15% 2011 59.79% 2021 53.8% Year % of native brits 1981 87% 2001 59.79% 2011 44.89% 2021 36.8%
Demographics change. No use crying about stupid borders on a map.
From what I’ve read, 59% are born in the UK. The 36% is specifically the people who are white.
So it has nothing to do with being native, it’s about being white.
Omarchy will henceforth be known as Oligarchy Linux.
Wait, are the three legs of the m secretly an l, i and g? That’s a bit on the nose.
Was this the guy who had that blog post about Europe being “ruined” by immigrants?
That explains how he suddenly got all these billionaires funding him. Who are definitely not the problem but the immigrants stealing your cookie
The immigrants aren’t stealing my cookies, but they ARE taking up houses, fucking with the jobs market (simply by existing). Not their fault, but our own politicians. I want to stop the mass-immigration, but it looks like they don’t, because the Holy GDP must be protected.
This is for the Netherlands, for context.
Did you consider building houses instead of whining about immigrants?
We (The Netherlands) are only able to build 70k buildings a year, due to a nitrogen crisis we’re dealing with, which isn’t enough when you have 100k net immigration + another 100k kids becoming adults… We’ve got a housing shortage of 410k (and growing). This has been growing since 1998 (when it hit a low-low 95k houses lacking).
Isn’t migration amazing!? Again, I don’t blame the migrants. I blame the politicians enabling this behaviour.
You don’t have a nitrogen crisis you have an unwillingness-to-build-houses crisis similar to all other Western countries infiltrated by hedge funds which use homes as speculation instead of living.
That does not really fit the Netherlands.
We absolutely have a housing shortage, and we have failed to build enough houses for years. Nitrogen deposition is a real ecological and, more importantly for construction, legal constraint. Dutch courts have repeatedly ruled that projects cannot simply add more nitrogen emissions around protected Natura 2000 areas without showing that this will not further damage them.
Your hedge-fund argument is unsubstantiated. Investors own only a minority of Dutch housing (~9%), and most of those houses are actually rented out. They are still being used as homes. In recent years investors have also been net sellers of existing houses rather than buying up ever larger parts of the market.
The actual problem is much broader. We have not built enough housing to keep up with population and household growth. That is caused by planning restrictions, slow procedures, expensive land, construction costs, financing, grid congestion, local opposition and nitrogen restrictions.
So yes, the Netherlands has a failure-to-build problem. But “there is no nitrogen crisis, hedge funds caused the housing crisis” just simply isn’t true.
Have you ever considered the nitrogen excuse is just a farce to not construct more housing?
Other options like importing prefab homes from foreign countries also exist
Immigrants or “expats”?
Immigrants at large. “Expats” isn’t a category tracked by our CBS, but presuming that’s equal to “Arbeid” (Labour), that’s only 20.6% in 2023 (latest numbers) of all migration.
Family (reunion) is another 21.7%, students are 12.2%, asylum is 9.8%, temporary protection (for Ukrainians, mostly) was 11.1%, and leftovers count for 24.6%
That is 335k immigrants (there were some 200k emigrants, IIRC, for a total of some 100k net immigration)
Look at the average European, people.
Yeah, it’s the rich people making it a problem.
Is. Has. Now with increased sponsorship.
Probably. The guy’s a fascist.
https://jakelazaroff.com/words/dhh-is-way-worse-than-i-thought/
I have no interest in whatever he wants to do to Linux.
being anti immigration, racist, and right of center doesn’t make someone a Nazi, has he yet called for the other races to be actively (not passivly) exterminated? has he even called for a non democratic system of government?
Quick read of his wiki… yeah no thx. The linux world is good as is without these kinda obvious red flags.
I checked the release notes of the new release out of curiosity and:
- Stop a video title from becoming the Download Video play command
- Stop an installed theme from running code
- Don’t put the user in the docker group; make it opt-in
- Stop USB device names from being executed as Hyprland Lua
Lmao. Nope.
Brother, how on earth does a USB execute as a goddamn DE? I couldn’t implement that bug if I wanted to.
✨ AI slop ✨
I couldn’t implement that bug if I wanted to.
Skill issues. :p Just joking, I have no idea too.
Deserialization error.
I would imagine that it is probably related to somme autorun type feature (like what windows has) but poorly implemented.
💀💀💀💀💀
So much for an arch rice with horrible decisions on everything?
It’s so silly that when a rich fascist starts an hobby all their friends chip in to create a 10 million dollar fund for it. They could just have paid for it themselves. Of course they get a tax write-off for that too probably.
I think that’s an exact description of what’s happening here. Rich piece of shit starts an hobby and makes a shitty thing, gets an absurd amount of funding from his buddies, then makes the hobby worse for everyone else. Neat!
That’s part of it. DHH also had a falling out with Ruby community for being a fascist piece of shit (well also some other stuff) so he is now building Foss community welcoming to fascists.
According to this blog post, Omarchy has lot of security issues: https://blog.happyfellow.dev/merchants-of-insecurity/
There are bangers like video title bash injection or all notifications being able to run arbitrary bash on your machine.
I’ll get over it if they split the money to all the projects that they depend on.
Arch, curl, ffmpeg, and every tiny thing that needs more funding.
Nothing good will come from this. Fascists aren’t the partners that the FLOSS movement needs.
Man… We do need to do some agitprop among Arch users. They have so much to learn and
from hearsaythe current meta is that they like to study, amiright?Fascists aren’t the partners that the FLOSS movement needs.
the liberatrian right seems to have a stranglehold over the linux eco system because of it’s labor aristrocratic foundation and i’m pessimistic that, that will ever change.
Wait what? Isn’t this just a set of scripts?
Wtf?
Apparently its no longer just a modification script collection. Its elevated to a distribution, as it has its own iso and can be installed without Archlinux to install before, has its own set of apps and repositories. Just learned this recently too. I don’t like Omarchy, but we have to be fair in calling what it is.
Yes this needs to be higher up in this thread, it is basically just a bunch of not even thst good scripts being elevated to an os, and now they are getting lots of money for it, there is so much weird sketchy fishy stuff happening here and this should not be allowed to happen lol
I wonder if this is why NetworkChuck put out a video recently on Omarchy. Maybe an undisclosed sponsorship?
He’s a religious nut, so wouldn’t put it past him.
And don’t worry, Chuck will drop it in a minute and move onto the next shiny thing.
Dogmatism really is the signifier for “this person is a scum.”
Is that the coffee guy?
What do you mean by religious nut? Do you mean hateful or simply religious? Implying the latter isn’t okay dawg.
It does seem a high percentage of older tech workers and creators are super religious to the point of harming others. Another example being Jeff
Edit: downvoting me because I don’t stand for hate against people with a religion is super cringe
Jeff Geerling? What happened?
If you internet archive his blog you will find it’s surprisingly full of Catholic hate. Rather disconnected from the identity he is portraying currently via YouTube.
It wasn’t long after the news of Omarchy funding hit media that NetworkChuck started shilling for it. I am no longer a subscriber
DHH is a twat. Would never use this distro. At least we have so many good distro’s to choose from!
Like NixOS!
Like GNU Guix!
When I think of FOSS, and people who are seriously committed to a copyleft future, these names suddenly spring into my mind
- Tobi Lütke, CEO of Shopify
- Patrick Collison, CEO of Stripe
- Michael Dell, Chairman and CEO of Dell Technologies
- Jack Dorsey, Block Head and Chairman of Block
- Matthew Prince, CEO of Cloudflare
- Brendan Iribe, Cofounder of Sesame and Oculus
- Jason Fried, CEO of 37signals
IDK why. Generosity, Linux, FLOSS, sharing, GPL… these terms all come to mind when those people’s names come up.
Oh wait, no it doesn’t.
This is also my concern. I love Hyprland and heard some stuff about there being political contraversy but never knew what it was.
So does all this mean that the cool FOSS compositor I use will be chock full of shitty blobs soon?
Is Framework still sponsoring this guy? (Yes, gifting hardware counts as sponsoring.)
I heard he got a coupon for a free soda at Burger King with purchase of an extra large value meal
Right, because a coupon for something worth cents is exactly the same as a several hundred bucks worth of hardware plus shipment…
holy shit shipment too wow
take the L and move on, no need to make us cringe more lol
lick the boot harder then
Which one?
You know who needs that money? Open hardware projects, everything around LoRa, projects that promote tech literacy, programs for accessibility, the Linux Foundation itself, list goes on. What needs it the least? An ass arch install with pre-installed programs.
Linux needs money.
The Linux Foundation can crash and burn for all I care.
Why?
DHH is the reason I left the Ruby ecosystem.
Same
What happened? Should Hyprland users consider Sway or River soon.
