It was independent (not under Microsoft) until late 2018, and moving is hard. Even after MS bought it, they tried to keep it independent. It’s really only been the last few years where it’s gone downhill.

It’s also kinda the defacto standard for git hosting due to being a solid early player in the space. I assume that view will change as Codeberg and other rivals get more ingrained in the open source stack.

Same here. I went through 3 Netgear’s and a Linksys in as many years and said no more. Moved to Ubiquiti and haven’t looked back. My current dream machine of two years replaced a still working but older/slower cloud gateway of 5 yrs with AC Pro’s and now a WiFi 7 AP. The last NetGear I replaced cost more than the Cloud Gateway + AC Pro. And the latter was way faster with better coverage.

Everyone’s got different luck with computer gear though. I know I’ve had bad luck with things other people rave about, so choices are great to have.

This is how I went and what I’d recommend. But that said, it’s a bit of a steep learning curve as not everything in the self hosted/home lab community comes with helm charts.

Thats not quite right. Sure Cali sets the emissions standards in the US for cars because they are the strictest, but it’s not because cali is big. Manufacturers don’t want to have to build and track multiple versions of vehicles for different states. Thats a huge pain. So they pick the strictest one and go with it because then it works everywhere.

Similarly they added day time running lights for all their North American cars because Canada wanted it. There was no law against it, so they again made one version of the car for the entire NA market and don’t have to care where the car ends up.

In this case, if some other state decides to enact more stringent regulations about age verification, they will meet that one, no matter the size, because it will mean they only have to follow one standard for the whole area. Dealing with a specific state’s laws over another is a pain so if one standard can take care of all of them it saves lots of time and money to just support the most restrictive one.

True, but that’s going to really be pushing your network links just to recover. Realistically, something like ZFS or a RAID-6 with extra hot spares would help reduce the risks, but it’s still a non trivial amount of time. Not to mention the impact to normal usage during that time period.

Rebuild time is the big problem with this in a RAID Array. The interface is too slow and you risk losing more drives in the array before the rebuild completes.

I actually started doing that. It’s a living document, shared with others. It’s the best solution I’ve come up with. Knowing whether or not I can convey enough info to make it usable and able to be followed for a less technical person like other family members drives my adoption of software/hardware solutions.

It’s the theoretically part that i haven’t figured out. I know none of my family members would have any idea what to do with anything. I feel like All the Data will just be lost when i go… which is a huge issue as everything moves to digital.

I’d rather new software versions were only released when there was a solid reason. A slow meaningful, well tested release cadence is generally a sign of more mature and stable software.

I want to follow this, and I sorta do… but ADHD makes the P,A and other A basically the same category. And the R is just “stuff I put down to look at but haven’t yet”.

I run it in a container on Kubernetes. Definitely recommend.

So I’ve done public DNS zone hosting and you can use let’s encrypt for certs and such, but

• What about caches? I basically use to reduce load and network traffic reduction before it gets to me so I don’t have to run my own varnish cache and get regional caching to reduce repeat cross country calls for people on the other coasts.
• What do you use for DDOS protection?

Basically, cloudflare is free, and i get all that. If I find another place better, I’m open to jumping ship.
