The best choice if you need to customize things is to not use gnome.

The gnome team does not want you to change things, they want you to use it as is. They go out of their way to be obtuse and stubborn.

Trying to cope and claim gnome is worth using at all if you don’t like vanilla gnome is cope of the highest order and actively just going to hurt people by making them suffer though a shit experience.

Use the right tool for the tool for the right job. Gnome is not a multi tool stop trying to make it one.

If you don’t like how something is on gnome then your wrong and should be ashamed. This is the gnome way

Move to something that respects you and respects that your computer is yours. Like literally any desktop that isn’t gnome.

Ubuntu literally has never in it’s history been a good gaming distro. It use to just be a popular one. But all of the Deb/apt distros have never been “good choices”

Arch and Gentoo were always the better options. And it’s really only recently that the rest become reasonable options.

Gaming has historically been best on absolutely bleeding edge distros with a bunch of hacky community patches and fixes.

Your using Ubuntu. Which honestly just loves to randomly shit the bed unless it’s on a server. This has been true for basically it’s entire existence.

Just use Debian or mint if your inlove with apt/Deb. Otherwise seriously switch to literally anything else. Anything is better then God damn Ubuntu.

I tried it for a few months it frankly was just objectively worse then using duckduckgo/bing.

It was just pissing money into a hole.

General rule of thumb for new users.

Doesn’t like to tinker and non gamer. Fedora

Likes to thinker and non gamer endeavour

Likes to tinker and gamer cachy

Arch at this point is no more unstable or prone to breaking then mint or any other distro barring like Debian. Cachy and endeavour with kde6 basically have solved the arch isn’t for new users problem coming from Windows.

So really you just need to ask yourself. Do you want your defaults to include gaming utilities or do you want to have to install them yourself. If your going to game you can save yourself hours as a new user with bazzite or cachy since they come out of the box with a button for “I want to install all the gaming stuff” and your good to go.

If you don’t game and just do basic work then you can go with fedora which will provide a great curated experience that basically just leaves you with a standard and reliable work PC.

Or endeavour which will drop you off right at the point of everything works, is reliable and ready for you to start learning. Even if you choose to never fiddle with anything, you still end up with a system that supports the widest possible amount of hardware and has one of the best user manuals of any distro family.

Seriously for as much as people claim you need a big community for refence material. Between cachy and arches wiki, you have a better source of information than any other option. It’s absurd how useful it is.

Arch is also just becoming the standard gaming option.

A lot of gaming communities that are migrating over are flowing to the aur for their community tools.

If you don’t like Manjaro for that then your going to hate steamOS. Lol

If you need to rely on back ports to have day to day function of HARDWARE. Then your OS is not suitable to your use case. Backport reliance should not be the norm for your avg user.
