Not sure how the new Pi5 is but Pi4 struggles quite a bit with Nextcloud. Nextcloud is not really designed to run on low-end devices, let alone an SBC. It may seem fine for the first time but when you actually try to do something, it’ll get sluggish and oftentimes downright completely fail.

I stopped using my Pi4 for anything file related but I guess there might be something that it can reliably run(I’m guessing Syncthing).

Not sure what you are trying to say. There’s little point to simply keeping records in a plaintext file, but that’s not what PTA is about.

It’s about using plaintext files that can work with various tools, such as ledger, hledger, or beancount, all capable of generating relevant reports and more, all while being able to edit/automate easily because, well, they’re just text files.

Also, the more automation you do the more you can focus on actual analysing your finances which can help you improve.

I’m sure every other tools like this can handle automation very well but provided that you are capable of writing scripts and stuff, PTA is much more versatile and it can work for you better.

PTA is the way to go.

hledger, especially, is amazing.

If you are concerned about storage price, you should use something like S3 or B2. It’s dirt cheap and it will work with almost anything you are currently using.

It is a bit more involved but you can actually get a proper cert for localhost stuff, with your domain pointing to an internal ip addr and not risk exposing your public ip and having to open a port.

It’s a GUI and a bit more than that. Restic’s biggest pain point is that periodic runs have to be set up manually. Backrest does that for you.

Although I’m using resticprofile, just because it also works(and has a nice web hook support) but I also use backrest and I highly recommend it.

Every single (opensource) automated location tracker I’ve tried drained battery to the point where it is borderline useful.

Your best bet is to use something like Immich like others mentioned but it lacks specific business data like Google Timeline has, which I don’t think it’s possible with anything else.

Big part of me loving selfhosting stuff is that I get to learn things a lot. I think it’s pretty amazing that these sort of projects exist but I’ll always use good ol’ $BASIC_SERVER_OS.
