Running server backs up to two local disks which can each hold 2 days at a time, but they both hold the same 2 days. Every night the most recent backup is uploaded offsite (friend’s house) where is stored versions in a normal scheme.

Looks really cool. I’ve been using own tracks with Nextcloud, but it’s not very reliable, especially with my wife’s iPhone. Unfortunately for me, Reitti hasn’t been packaged for Yunohost yet, but I will keep an eye on it!

I got into Linux while earning a degree in social sciences. That led to self-hosting, which later led me to a job in IT.

The way that I handled this, was to get a $5 VPS, and have it proxy all my traffic over wireguard. Your DNS records (and SSL cert) all point to the VPS public IP address. IPtables rules route all relevant traffic.

Is the server at your house? Or VPS?

I don’t understand this whole thing about years of uptime. Don’t you ever get system/security/kernel updates that require a reboot?

Jellyfin, Navidrome and Nextcloud. I use them all every day!

Just want to throw out another option. They make Bluetooth phones. I got my parents a set years ago so that they would hear the phone ringing no matter where they left their cell (in the house). These are wireless handsets, and they even announce the contact name or phone number.

If you want it completely separate from your cell, connect an old/cheap device with either a low-priced SIM plan, a google voice account or jmp.chat. Pair that with the Bluetooth home phone for the aesthetic.

I mean it like, it’s a slow progression that builds on other interests, rather than your average person deciding suddenly to self-host. And it’s not that I think it is or isn’t worthwhile, I just have a different idea about what “we” are trying to accomplish. If your priority is to grow the userbase of one particular community or project, then I can see why you would want to have “presence” on corporate platforms. I still think it warrants an examination of the principles of self-hosting and consideration of “alternative” platforms.

If a little light sarcasm is incivility to you, then you’re in for a real struggle. I don’t know how most people end up self-hosting but I suspect it’s more of an organic process. For me, jeez… I can probably trace it back to using StumbleUpon browser extension, hearing about Linux, then installing it as a way to avoid studying for exams. Once I was using Linux on my computer, I suppose self-hosting was inevitable. Where did I get the info? Wherever I could find it.

I’m in the same boat, but I’m starting to look around again. I’m curious about Wayland, so I started looking at Debian KDE last night, but I get hung up on choosing between stable, testing or unstable. Also the download page wasn’t working for me.

Do you know what a hyperlink is? You just click on it and it takes you to Lemmy. You sign up, pretty much the same way you have done for every other service you have ever used. What are we doing here? Are we not trying to build alternatives to the corpo-surveillance hellscape that the internet has become? Give users a little more credit, and a little more incentive. Otherwise, you’re sending mixed messages when you offer a way to get their photos away from google or something, but you force them to use fucking Discord for support.

I understand that POV, but if people want help, they’ll go to where it is. Walk the talk of FOSS. That’s how we’ll build better communities.

There’s a certain irony making this comment on Lemmy.

Main camera is whatever default is for Graphene. Also use “Open Camera” and “Fair Scan” from fdroid.

I just use a different camera app for those kind of pictures (receipts, etc). That camera app is configured to save pix to a location that doesn’t get backed up.

Does it support Wayland? I know they’re working on it, but last I read it was still a WIP.
