i dunno. i just worked on one of their ‘gaming’ rigs. weird chinese-branded everything. 3 months old, won’t stay running. crashes constantly. re-installs don’t help. it’s trash. the vendor has all but disappeared. still has their storefront but they don’t answer, and amazon won’t help either.

even though i swapped out the atrocious no-name motherboard so now it’s at least usable, i expect to see it again with a failed psu, gpu, or ram.

they might make it on availability or price, but longevity or reliability they have a lot of work to do.

i have a POS laptop here with a small ssd in it, gemini lake, originally came with 4gb and hdd. as sold, was about the slowest piece of shit available that ‘officially’ supports win11. it has 8gb and that 120gb ssd now, and it’s barely usable to look at a web page.

i just get it out when i need to show someone something online or do something online for them.

parted_magic has gui tools for this (among many other things) on a bootable image. it’s not free, but a one-off download is only like 20 bucks (use that version forever). secure erase and running smart tests are about the only things i use it for, and even just for that it is definitely worth the lunch money.

yea a lot of them do report linux, if they report an os at all. however, in a survey of “desktop” visitors, one would expect visits determined to not be ‘interactively human’ to be omitted entirely from the counts.

putting osx and macos on separate lines was dumb af. the ‘drop’ of osx over the last ~ 18 months is entirely offset by the debut (and thus, an ‘increase’ from zero) of the name change to macos. it’s a wash there.

linux gains are almost entirely windows’ loss, but whether it’s a legitimate trend or not will take time to determine.

this is not gonna end well for the company or its games… so the only thing i can think of is it’s simply a big a smoke screen for some financial shenanigans.

usmobile.com does a cellular-based ‘home phone’ (base station you connect a traditional POTS phone to) for about the same ($9.99/mo, $99/yr), plus hardware at about $100. walmart does the same (via ‘straight talk’) at $15/mo and about $50 for the hardware. no internet needed for the service as they use cellular.

the gnome foundation, however, is a u.s. organization, based in california.

it’s not FOSS (it is ‘free to use’ at home) or a ‘server’ application (it’s a windows application), but i just use mailstore home to create and update a local archive of a gmail account. its dot.net requirement is minimal (v4.8 or higher) but i have not yet tried to run it with wine, as i have a separate box that runs windows stuff.

i remember hooking ours up to a 10th gen celeron desktop (supposedly 58w cpu).

the whole box doesn’t even hit 20w at the wall under a full load, and it idles awake at about 5w.

i immediately set that one aside for future use to feed media to a tv or run a dietpi or something.

akonadi is a dependency of some applications that are bundled in a default kde desktop, such as is installed using the kde-standard metapackage in debian.

these applications include kmail, korganizer, kaddressbook, and akregator. removing those four items from a default debian trixie kde install also removes any installed packages with ‘akonadi’ in the name.

budgie 11’s move to qt will sorta ‘fill a gap’ between lxqt and kde.

in this case, the platform (i.e. vlc) has literally not changed. it’s essentially the same thing it’s been for going-on twenty years. there has been no updates or upgrades or changes that affect how it looks or runs. version 3.0 is like eight years old. version 2 was pretty much the same, as was version 1 before that. vlc is one of the most stable and consistent software applications on the planet.
