Clearly a distro that needs $8m $12m USD in funding from a seemingly random group of tech companies. I have no reason at all to question the investments into it from companies like Dell, Stripe, Shopify, CoinBase or any others. I mean their business clearly relies on this packaged up copy of a mediocre /r/unixporn post so why wouldn’t they dump money into it?

But for real, I got a used fully enclosed server rack for pretty cheap ($300 CADish) from a company who was moving entirely to the cloud and that thing can keep a lot of noise contained. I have three servers and a chunky network switch so its all pretty loud but when I close the rack’s door it reduces the volume by at least 50%. If its open I’m easily able to hear it from my ground floor but not otherwise

Fair point! In this case, I sold it to my brother who got through a fair bit of university with it so it did help a lot of people.

I get sentimental about tech that I used for a while though so I kind of hoard it all now that I don’t need to sell the device to replace it

Yeah 100%. Their response to the event is pretty much where all of my feelings come from on the subject. They explicitly state they knew they were releasing literal nazi iconography and then explicitly chose to put it out where it wouldn’t get them in legal trouble.

Not only that but IIRC they actually changed the original game dev’s marketing material to use the symbols without the devs even knowing.

It was about 4 months out of date at code freeze from my understanding and 6 months out of date on release which is honestly better than I’d expect normally for packages in official repos

I’d love to hear what your solution would be? They freeze everything two months out to allow for thorough testing and unless your answer to the problem is switching to a rolling release cycle (which is exactly the opposite of what its supposed to be), then I don’t think there’s anything to be done

This sort of distro is and always has prioritised stability over having the latest of everything and that’s a good thing. I use CachyOS on my desktop but it’s the absolute last thing I’d put on a server, let alone a production one.

Just use Docker if you need something newer

For sure and I agree that should be enough but the average person is not good with computers and they don’t want to learn. They won’t understand the nuances of different distributions of Linux. Like try explaining the difference between a .deb, a .tar.gz, and a .rpm to a person who’s already hésitent about using Linux. Flatpak solves that by just having one download that any Linux install can use
