AI should be an add-on, not built in. Microsoft is constantly bulldozing their AI product into Windows. I always hated that.
Gnome is introducing embedded AI but that is an actual add-on despite the AI hate. So there’s nothing to hate about gnome giving features to the users who do want to embed AI.
It’s a lot to take in (I’m only looking at one of your questions) but I’ll start by saying I’ve always heard you install Linux after windows so that the Linux bootloader stays intact.
Also, you can’t brick your laptop like a phone. Something goes wrong, you reinstall and try again. Linux users also backup data because what are you to expect from a computer? To be flawless? Heh.
Yoga X1…fingerprint sensor doesn’t work but eh…love my gnome!
Ultimately my choice of distro came down to what packages are available under the package managers.
I found a couple of packages only under the AUR so I go Arch.
But what I want from Linux, and what makes it Linux to me is the DE. So I could use Fedora Gnome or EndeavourOS gnome and just go with whichever is best for my use case.
Yeah, gnome is built for touchscreen and mouse. People prefer different things and I love gnome for it’s minimalistic style and modular customisability via extensions. KDE is also great, but I tipped my favour towards gnome for something different.
I also noticed vlc has broken (installed last week apparently)
Using the pacman syntax:
pacman -Q -i -d vlc
showed a conflict with the vlc-plugin (which appeared to be uninstalled already) and no vlc-plugin-#### installed.
The dependencies were fully explained in the list, including the vlc-plugins-all dependency. I’m lazy so that’s the dependency I installed on my EndeavourOS.
Gnome is a bit of a different animal these days, I get it that it won’t fit everyone’s use case.
Windows 10 requiring sign in only made me start using Tiny10 but even then I figured if end of life was happening, I may as well settle into using my favourite distribution. I love the feeling of Fedora but I have to use Arch for its incorporation of Deepin stuff.
My WiFi on arch is so all over the place when it connects to my phone hotspot. Connects, disconnects, “oh what’s the password again?” Otherwise router based WiFi is fine.
Actually the Bluetooth is somewhat even more reliable than the Windows one. And it waits for you to connect manually instead of auto connecting to that one speaker you happen to have on.
Gnome is pretty well integrated with everything, especially with extensions to make up for less features in stock gnome than kde.
In 2006 my university used Ubuntu, I thought ‘Wow, this is different!’ Tried it out on my own computer but I was a heavy gamer so windows was the best option (hey, Win7 pretty alright anyway!)
Fast forward to about 2022, I try it again but it’s not getting incorporated well with my program usage in school (as a teacher).
Fast forward to 2024, worked out that Tencent software is on AUR (teacher in Mainland China) and I figure I’m doing another dive. So far, so good. Little itty bitty glitches especially with Libreoffice but I’m getting by without touching Win10.
Not surprised, it was a bit of a niche project that was quite hard to get into (the options took a bit of reading around to understand what they were on about). It is easy enough to find the flavour of UI you want and more from the arch distros out there (I just found I actually do need cups on my EndeavourOS gnome distro and that’s something I didn’t toggle (printing). Time to throw in some cups and foomatic packages in there). So again, it’s about purpose and as much as I would have liked to have gotten into something about customisation, I’ve kind of already got a minimal-ish distro to work on.
Brave is a fairly recent outlier, and while it isn’t quite proprietary, it stinks a fair bit of something capitalist/crypto.

Fedora, so most Gnome based distros. KDE as commented beside me. Arch-based EndeavourOS.
Congratulations, but you’ll be hard pushed to get windows apps (especially enterprise ones) working. Will probably need to virtualise windows.
