Hey all,

I use redlib instead of reddit for the info I still need to access on that platform. Recently, and with the API changes, the existing public instances being unreliabile cause of that I was maybe looking to host an instance myself. I don’t know if I wanna keep it private or not but in the scenario that I do make it a public instance, how would I manage this? Is it a good idea to host this in my home, cause I have a residential IP. I dont want to get that banned by reddit, so residential proxies? I assume a random VPN would be blocked. Also what about bot protection? Anubis and crowdsec? What specs would be needed for such an instance?

Thank you!

You will likely run into the same issues many of the public instances are encountering, regardless of whether your instance is public/private or run behind a proxy or VPN. Either the main Redlib project requires updates to work through the recent Reddit restrictions or you would need to create your own fork (or use someone else’s) that works around the new restrictions.

Many of the other forks’ current work arounds require entering the credentials of a Reddit account. This either makes you identifiable if you keep the Redlib instance private (all traffic from the provided Reddit account is exclusively “your” traffic) or more likely to be banned if you make the instance public. Regardless, many using this work around assume any Reddit account used by this work around will eventually be banned.

It’s great that you are looking to selfhost this. However, if this is your first time selfhosting something then unfortunately I think it may be a good idea to try something else first due to some of the recent challenges Redlib is facing. To be clear, selfhosting Redlib isn’t necessarily challenging and is not a very resource intensive application, but it may be discouraging to get everything set up only to find out that your instance doesn’t work (like many of the other ones) or requires regular maintenance due to the changing Reddit restrictions.
