Hello!

I am currently working on building an open source self hosted application that allows you to record, edit, and publish podcast episodes (like Castopod but more emphasis on recording and editing).

I’m not sure if this is the best place to ask but I am looking to see if I could maybe find a small handful of people who would be willing to play around and test either a version running on their own system or the production demo I have running.

I’ve been messing around with it myself for several months but have not received feedback from pretty much anyone else and would like to know what some others think. I initially published the project to GitHub about 5 months ago.

Thanks!

Edit: the link to the GitHub is

To keep in line with current rules, as this is on the line for a promo post, please take a look at the last two rules and tag appropriately - [CBH] or [AIP]. If you did use AI to develop, rule 8 explains the disclosure, and if you have any questions please ask.

For what it’s worth, nothing in that link under the self-promotion rule mentions using that tag. It is only the link under the AI rule that instructs you to use one of those tags. If a developer did not use AI at all, they likely would not follow that link to read further into the AI rules and would therefore never see any rule instructing them to use some [CBH] tag. If you want non-AI developers to do something special, you should also mention that requirement under the relevant rule instead of just hiding that under the rules that only AI-devs will read the details of.

Well crap! Its only in the detailed rules…

I’ll take care of that shortly

Edit: There we go, in there now, though I can probably clean that up a bit better to be more clear. I’ll address that later though, time to start the work day…

(like Castopod but more emphasis on recording and editing)

You’re just going to have a hard time competing with what are at this point very polished audio recorders and editors like Audacity and Reaper. The integration with the hosting platform seems unnecessary.

But I wish you the best of luck!

      Reaper

Reaper is good. I use Ableton. Tho I’ve never tried it, Ardour can be selfhosted.

Sure, I mean take your pick. The point is that these are all very mature software products and OP wants to recreate the whole thing for the purpose of being integrated into the web platform. I just don’t see the value in it, personally. It’s not hard to upload files.

I’ll have to check that all out tonight! I updated the post to include a link to the GitHub. I wasn’t sure if I should include it or not - mainly just trying to get a bit of feedback haha

Yeah I hear you. I’m always concerned promoting myself will upset folks, but more often than not folks want to know links. Easier to include and remove if needed. :-)

Post the link and people will check it out. Is it much different than HarborFM? I’ve played with many podcast apps so I’m curious what you got cooking. Does it support podcast 2.0 name space?

It’s actually identical to HarborFM because that is the app I’m talking about lol I’m surprised you even thought of it.

And it actually supports quite a few 2.0 name spaces already! But definitely been looking at supporting more.

Ha! That’s funny. I tried it a few months ago and liked it. Maybe I’ll have to revisit it but my server hdd just died and with prices the way they are I e been dragging my feet. I like your project though!! More 2.0 support the better!!

I will say from what I remember, it was easier to understand than castopod in terms of usage and getting started. When I get the itch to podcast again I’ll likely land on your app first!
